What happens
The person is collected and cared for by the provider, then cremated without mourners present, usually at a time chosen by the provider. The ashes are returned to you, and you are free to hold any memorial you wish, whenever and wherever you wish — at home, at a favourite place in Wales, or not at all.
The provider handles the paperwork, the coffin (usually a simple one), and transport to the crematorium. There is no hearse procession, no service in the chapel, and no viewing unless the provider offers it as an extra.
What it costs in Wales
Direct cremation prices in Wales typically sit well below a traditional attended funeral, but the range between providers is wide, even for what is essentially the same service — so comparing first is worthwhile.

- Check exactly what is included: collection distance, doctors' fees where they still apply, ashes return or delivery, and the coffin.
- Ask whether the crematorium fee is included or charged on top.
- Ask where the cremation will take place — some providers use a crematorium outside your area.
Who it suits — and who it doesn't
It often suits families who want simplicity, who plan a personal memorial later, or who need to keep costs down. Many people now choose it deliberately and hold a celebration of life weeks afterwards, when everyone can travel.
Some people find the absence of a moment together at the time difficult, particularly if the memorial ends up being delayed. If seeing the person, or being present at the committal, matters to you or to others in the family, a direct cremation may not be the right shape — some providers offer a short attended goodbye for an extra fee, which is worth asking about.
There is no right answer here, and cost is a legitimate factor in the decision. Choosing a simpler funeral says nothing about how much someone was loved.
