Registering a death

Registering is a short appointment, but it helps to arrive with the right documents and to know how many certificate copies to order.

Who can register

Usually a relative. If no relative is available, it can be someone present at the death, an official from the hospital, or the person arranging the funeral.

What to bring

The registrar will ask for details about the person who died. Bring what you can find.

  • Medical certificate of cause of death, if it has not been sent electronically
  • Full name, date and place of birth, last address, occupation
  • Details of a surviving spouse or civil partner
  • NHS number, birth or marriage certificate if you have them

How many certificates

Most families need between four and eight certified copies. Each organisation holding money or a policy typically wants to see one. Copies bought later cost more.
